Love in the time of Emoticons
‘LOL’ was all she wrote.
Rudy could not make sense of it. How could his proclamation of love be reciprocated with an LOL? The times have truly changed he thought.
Technology was dictating the way we felt our emotions and had reduced them to a few letters of the alphabet.
It had only been a year since he had met her, but he knew she was the one.
He remembered how she was sitting in her wheelchair at the hospital, waiting for her turn for an X-ray. He was there to get a cyst removed.
He looked at her for a long time before he could gather the courage to speak with her. She had laughed at his clumsy attempt to befriend her.
That laughter still rang in his ears today. And today she was laughing through the texting app. He had to know if she was dismissing his love and had put him in the ‘friend zone’ or was it just her way of laughing to make the situation light.
He looked at his phone and decided to lighten it further and texted her an ‘LOL’ too. He waited holding his breath and saw that she had read the message but had not yet replied.
Love was certainly the last thing on his mind till he met her. Now it was all he could feel when he was with her, spoke with her or dreamt of her. All his energy was devoted to her.
He wanted to care for her and wanted to wake up with her and go to sleep with her by his side.
A lifetime of loneliness was all he had known, but now there was hope of a change, a possibility.
All that time he had never met someone like her. Her laughter was music to his ears, a symphony, when she lost herself in that laughter.
A person who laughed as she did, never felt the weight of the world on her shoulders.
Having been in a wheelchair all her life, she did not ever feel that life had been unfair to her.
Her spirit was unbreakable.
This is what he loved about her and this love arose from the admiration that he had for her.
Just then he saw a reply to his text and it said ‘I love you 2’.
