Do Unto Others

“Do unto others as you would want them to do unto you” is what Sam heard Mina say on the car stereo while he was trying to find a parking spot.

It was a great thought, but was it possible to be so aware of the inner workings of our mind?

It was indeed a solution to our problems, as we were not aware of our own processes that harboured negative thoughts and feelings towards others.

“Nobody is responsible for anybody’s happiness or unhappiness. It is all, the fruit of our deeds” he heard her say next.

This too made sense. It was always what we gave out into the world that we got back. This was plain and simple.

“Good done unto others is good done unto oneself.” “There are no others.” This list of simple truths was indeed very easy to understand. Not so easy to practice though.

He finally managed to park the car and took the tape out of the deck. He was worried about losing it in case the car was stolen. He didn’t mind losing the car, but he did not want to lose the tape. It was the only memory of his deceased wife. They had each prepared tapes for the other stating what had inspired them individually.

He went into the restaurant from where they used to order takeaway. His order was ready. He paid for it and picked up the parcel. He drove home and sat down to eat.

He popped the tape in the stereo and reminisced about the time they had both gone to Thiruvanamalai and had Darshan of Sri Ramana Maharshi’s samadhi. They had bought a lot of books from the book stall at the ashram. That was twelve years ago.

Sri Ramana Maharshi had become their guiding light and they loved reading the books from the ashram. We were One, and this was the truth. How much longer would we continue feeding our ego?

Doing unto others was indeed doing unto oneself, as we were all the same. It would take humility to accept this truth. Nothing less would do.

We were blessed to have been born in a culture where there had been so many enlightened masters whose teachings were there to guide us. He knew that. And Mina had known that. She had utmost faith in the fact that we were ourselves the end of our search.

All conflict in the world was because of mine and yours. This separation was the hurdle one had to overcome. It was indeed an illusion. Yet we were all comfortable living the illusion.

World leaders started wars purely to keep the power they had by creating fear in the hearts of the people. The people knew no better. And this separation was the root cause of turmoil all across the world.

All that was needed was to not take oneself seriously.

The awakening had yet to come to mankind. And it was on the way.
